Social Networking Sites

4 very popular sites social media sites include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Vine (RIP). Facebook owns Instagram and Twitter owned Vine before they ended the project. Facebook and Instagram focus on sharing moments with family and friends where as twitter and vine were meant for more immediate quick communication.

Facebook and Instagram focus on connecting users with each other. They don't limit the amount of text/ images you can post because they encourage endless sharing. Instagram is more photography oriented than Facebook. In order to make a post on Instagram you need to have a photo or video. From this photo/video you can then add a caption. But you can't post strictly text by itself. Facebook is less photography oriented and more connection oriented. Facebook allows you to post anything you want: video, text, photos, a link. In addition Facebook encourages more collaboration. Facebook allows you to plan events and groups that your friends can join and rsvp to. Instagram brings people together through art where as Facebook bring people together through interaction.

Twitter users are limited to a 140 character tweet. Knowing this limit users are forced to condensed their ideas into an easily readable tweet. Vine similarly put a limit on how long of videos its users could post. Vine users had a video limit of 7 seconds. The whole idea of vine and twitter was to force users to get their impotent ideas out as quick as they could. These networks forced users to eliminate small talk and just say what was necessary. Ultimately vine proved to be unprofitable and irrelevant once twitter allowed users to post videos directly on twitter (bypassing vine). The popularity of twitter and vine speaks to the low level of attention many consumers have. People would much rather read 140 characters than an two page paragraph about what you did last night. Why watch two minutes of videos from an event when you can see the best 7 seconds?

Creativity and New Media

I made a video highlight tape of some of my blocks from my volleyball season and posted it to Instagram. My Instagram is private so I took a video of it to post here. I had to crop some of the comments because they were inappropriate. I combined my passion for volleyball and video editing when i created this. In addition i added one of my favorite songs to play in the background. I don't have many Instagram followers but this post gave me the most views and favorites that I've ever had. (UPDATE: the video I initially tried to post isn't buffering so I attached some screen shots)

P2P

File sharing is as the name implies, a way to transfer data digitally. This can be applied for the smallest files to the biggest. Whether you share the notes you took the other day in class, or a two hour documentary, you're participating in file sharing. P2P file sharing stands for person to person file sharing. The P2P implies that a user is sending the data to another user. Consider the difference between P2P file sharing and buying a song off of iTunes. When you buy a song from iTunes, you aren't interacting with anyone, you're just downloading a song. If you P2P file shared that same song, you, the uploader would send the file directly to the receiver. An example of P2P file sharing is the open source project BitTorrent. According to The BitTorrent Effect, in April 2001 Bram Cohen quit his job and created BitTorrent. BitTorrent overcomes a problem with P2P file sharing: the bottle neck. ISPs will allow users to download files at high speeds but they only let them upl

Next New

New media involves the 5 c's: Communication, Collaboration, Community, Creativity, and Convergence. The next new media development will involve all five of those. I imagine a social media for musicians. People could select their instruments, and be partnered up with other users who they want to play with. For example someone playing the saxophone could play with another saxophone player and from a duet. Or a guitar player could be looking for  drummer and a bassist to form a rock band with.  Users would plug their instruments into the computer and listen to each other playing through their headphones. They could also share a live video of them playing. This new media would connect musicians around the world. Users could play with complete strangers or play with their band members if they couldn't meet up in one location. This new media would create a community of musicians. Who would converge together  and collaborate on creating music together. This form of new media would c
