Next New

New media involves the 5 c's: Communication, Collaboration, Community, Creativity, and Convergence. The next new media development will involve all five of those. I imagine a social media for musicians. People could select their instruments, and be partnered up with other users who they want to play with. For example someone playing the saxophone could play with another saxophone player and from a duet. Or a guitar player could be looking for  drummer and a bassist to form a rock band with.  Users would plug their instruments into the computer and listen to each other playing through their headphones. They could also share a live video of them playing. This new media would connect musicians around the world. Users could play with complete strangers or play with their band members if they couldn't meet up in one location.

This new media would create a community of musicians. Who would converge together  and collaborate on creating music together. This form of new media would change how musicians communicate and practice with each other.

  1. It seems like a great way to avoid consuming immoderate flow of irrelevant information normally provided by the present media, but instead solely focus on one's interests and competence. I think, this media will certainly create more opportunities for any professionals, not only musicians, to improve their skills by representing all 5 c"s together in one place.

  2. Very interesting! The idea has a purpose which is great and I think social media dresses the music industry and artists who are up and coming. The fact you mention the 5 C’s is also great and I think its a great foundation when setting up this idea.

Creativity and New Media

I made a video highlight tape of some of my blocks from my volleyball season and posted it to Instagram. My Instagram is private so I took a video of it to post here. I had to crop some of the comments because they were inappropriate. I combined my passion for volleyball and video editing when i created this. In addition i added one of my favorite songs to play in the background. I don't have many Instagram followers but this post gave me the most views and favorites that I've ever had. (UPDATE: the video I initially tried to post isn't buffering so I attached some screen shots)

P2P

File sharing is as the name implies, a way to transfer data digitally. This can be applied for the smallest files to the biggest. Whether you share the notes you took the other day in class, or a two hour documentary, you're participating in file sharing. P2P file sharing stands for person to person file sharing. The P2P implies that a user is sending the data to another user. Consider the difference between P2P file sharing and buying a song off of iTunes. When you buy a song from iTunes, you aren't interacting with anyone, you're just downloading a song. If you P2P file shared that same song, you, the uploader would send the file directly to the receiver. An example of P2P file sharing is the open source project BitTorrent. According to The BitTorrent Effect, in April 2001 Bram Cohen quit his job and created BitTorrent. BitTorrent overcomes a problem with P2P file sharing: the bottle neck. ISPs will allow users to download files at high speeds but they only let them upl
