New media is a relatively new concept that is only possible due to the evolution of web 2.0. Before new media hit the web, the internet was mainly used for research and posting ideas in plain text. Their was very little interaction that it allowed for. Users were able to retain anonymity as they viewed websites/forums. However as technology got more advanced and new media hit the scene, this idea of privacy was erased. The era of New Media does not allow for anonymity.
Entrepreneurs have viewed the web as a fruitful resource in collecting user insights and data. Because of these many new media companies that are "free" are only "free" because they profit off of your information. Social Media companies rely on user generated content to create traffic. So not only do you give up your privacy to your personal information, you give up your privacy to your data. Any time you interact with new media you are being recorded. There are many stories of people losing jobs or not getting hired because of something they said on their social media. With New Media, your identity and thoughts are on display for everyone and anyone to see.
